Build a sequence: steps, delays, merge tags, stop-on-reply
The campaign builder end to end — writing steps, setting delays, personalizing with merge tags, and the conditions that halt a sequence.
A campaign in SendCanyon is a sequence of email steps sent to a list, spread over days, through a pool of your mailboxes. Create one under Campaigns → New campaign; the builder walks Audience → Sequence → Sending → Review.
Audience
Pick one or more contact lists. The builder shows the effective audience after exclusions: suppressed addresses, invalid contacts, and contacts already in another active campaign (on by default — two simultaneous sequences to one person is how you get complaints). Risky-validation contacts are excluded unless you explicitly include them.
Steps and delays
Each step is a subject plus body. Steps after the first can either continue the thread (Reply in same thread — recommended) or start fresh with a new subject. Between steps you set a delay in days; delays count business days by default so a Thursday step two doesn't fire step three on Saturday. Our default template is four steps with three-day gaps — see the reasoning.
Merge tags
Personalize with double-brace tags that resolve per contact at send time: {{first_name}}, {{last_name}}, {{company}}, {{title}}, plus any custom field by its own name, e.g. {{fieldName}}. A tag with nothing to fill it in for a given contact renders blank rather than failing the send — there is no fallback-value syntax yet, so write copy that still reads naturally when a field is empty. A preview panel renders each step against real contacts from your list so you can read exactly what recipient number 412 will receive.
Stop conditions
- Stop on reply (on by default, and it should stay on): a reply cancels all remaining steps for that contact and moves the thread to your Inbox tab. Read the note below on how a reply reaches SendCanyon in the first place — this stop condition is only as good as that signal.
- Stop on click / open (optional): treat a click or repeated opens as engagement and stop, for workflows where a human takes over.
- Automatic stops you can't disable: unsubscribes, hard bounces, and new suppression entries always halt the remaining steps for that contact.
Finish on the Review screen — it summarizes audience size, total sends the sequence will generate, and flags anything that would surprise you. Then Launch, or save as draft.
